Stamping foil
The gold they approved, from the lot they approved.
Hot and cold stamping foil, slit from the jumbo roll, priced per inch, and checked against the buyer's approved mill lot before it leaves. Live at one hot and cold stamping foil trader.
Where the margin leaks
Foil comes in jumbo rolls, and the shade drifts from one mill lot to the next. A binder approves one gold and sends the next back. Ordence keeps each buyer's approved lots, plans the slit from a 640 mm jumbo with the waste in rupees, quotes per inch, and blocks a mixed or unapproved lot at dispatch.
How the foil trade works
Five layers, two processes, one shade that moves.
Hot foil is a layered film: polyester base, release coat, colour lacquer, a metal layer for gold, silver or holographic, and a heat-set glue. A hot die presses it onto book cloth, paper or board. Cold foil needs no heat; it sticks to glue printed on a label or carton press. The buyer's machine decides which, and a foil that works on cloth may fail on a varnished carton.
Buyers order by shade code, width in inches and roll length. The same gold looks different on matte and gloss, so an approval holds for one buyer and one job, not just a shade code. When a new lot lands, the trader must know who approved the last one before the first roll goes.
Units and documents
- On the roll. Shade code, hot or cold, width, length in metres and the mill lot.
- For pricing. Per inch of width per roll at the counter; landed cost per m² behind it.
- From the mill. The lot number on every jumbo, kept on every slit roll.
GST and HSN for stamping foil
What GST asks of you
Stamping foils are named in heading 3212, at 18% in Schedule II. The carrier is PET film, but the goods are stamping foil, not plastic film under 3920.
Same state as you, CGST 9 and SGST 9; another state, IGST 18. Never both.
What Ordence does
Each buyer's approved lots on file; a dispatch gate blocks a mixed or unapproved lot.
Slit rolls keep the jumbo's mill lot and landed cost.
HSN on every invoice line. Ordence prepares the GSTR-1 file; you or your CA file it.
GST rates checked 14 October 2026 against Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate), in force since 22 September 2025. Classification depends on the exact goods. Confirm yours with your CA.
In the system
From the foil trader's live system: an invoice traced to its rolls, a slitting plan, a shipment's landed cost.

Questions
Can we price foil per inch at the counter?
Yes. Quotes price per inch, set GST from the buyer's GSTIN, and save the margin at quote time.
Do slit rolls keep the jumbo's mill lot?
Yes. Each slit roll keeps its jumbo's mill lot and landed cost, so tracing and margin still work.
A buyer complains about one roll. Who else has that lot?
The invoice leads to each roll and its mill lot. Ordence then lists every other buyer of that lot.
Bring a week of slitting slips.
And the shade approvals your binders and printers signed. On the fit call we check them against the lot gate and slitting plan, roll by roll.
